The chapters on chromosome evolution, genic variation and balance, isolating mechanisms including the "insemination reaction," and hybridization contain information of interest to biologists generally. The group of species which has been most thoroughly investigated, the virilis group, is dealt with in a separate chapter which can be read more or less. independently of the remainder of the book. A final chapter of comparisons and conclusions is also of general interest, for the Drosophila findings are compared with those in other organisms.
